Our services include comprehensive, free civil legal services, financial empowerment, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community partnerships. We aim to disrupt systemic racism by serving individuals and families whose legal and financial crises are often rooted in racial inequality. NYLAG goes to where the need is, providing services in more than 150 community sites (e.g. courts, hospitals, libraries) and on our Mobile Legal Help Center. During COVID-19, most of our services were virtual to keep our community safe. NYLAG’s staff of 350 impacted the lives of nearly 113,000 people last year.

 

Job description

The Special Litigation Unit of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is seeking applications from attorneys with at least two years of litigation experience.   The position is funded for eight months, beginning in February 2024. This temporary position is available as either a full-time or part-time (at least 70%) position.

 

The Special Litigation Unit collaborates with NYLAG attorneys across practice areas to develop and litigate complex impact litigations that advance social, racial, and economic justice, addressing the full range of legal areas in which NYLAG serves clients. Alone, or in partnership with other not-for-profit organizations and private firms working pro-bono, we initiate class actions and other impact lawsuits to bring about systemic change for thousands of people in need.

 

The attorney will work primarily on public housing, immigration, and public benefits, and may also work on a variety of other issues on SLU’s docket, including consumer protection, special education, and disability rights. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The attorney’s responsibilities will include: developing new cases, including legal and factual research on potential class actions; drafting complaints, motions, and briefs; engaging in discovery, including drafting and responding to discovery requests, and taking and/or defending depositions, and assisting with document review; interviewing, advising, and advocating on behalf of individual class members; engaging in settlement negotiations and monitoring compliance with settlements; and participating in internal strategy discussions, negotiations with adversaries, and in-court appearances. 

 

Qualifications

  • Admitted to practice law in New York
  • At least two years of litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice.

Salary Range: NYLAG is a unionized workplace, and salaries are set pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. The current salary range for this position is between $77,117 - $85,892.
