Support Staff Supervisor - Civil Legal Services

SUPPORT STAFF SUPERVISOR, CIVIL LEGAL SERVICES UNIT

 

DEFINITION:        Under direction of the Civil Legal Services Unit Chief Attorney, works with Chief Attorney, Support Staff and Staff Attorneys providing representation to civil legal services clients; provides training and direct supervision of non-attorney support staff; manages filing system and ancillary internal office processes; assists Chief Attorney with intakes, work flow among attorneys and among support staff and productivity; performs related duties as required.

 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:               

  1. Oversees file management and office procedures within the Civil Legal Services Unit.
  2. Ensures accurate and timely delivery of legal services to Civil Unit clients through supervision of support staff, and in their absence performs such duties.
  3. At the direction of Chief Attorney, trains and supervises all non-attorney support staff job performance, including adherence to time and attendance policies of the Bureau.
  4. At the direction of Chief Attorney, supervises and assists in the preparation of motions, letters, and file updates.
  5. Supervises proper maintenance of cases from case opening through case closing and scanning, including but not limited to assigning advocates, assigning funding codes, and reviewing closed case outcomes.
  6. At the direction of Chief Attorney, coordinate work flow to attorneys.
  7. Participates in development and improvement of the Bureau through staff task forces, committees, meetings and other means.
  8. Cooperates with other members of the Unit, office and programs to develop effective teamwork and make the Bureau institutionally strong.
  9. Performs all responsibilities detailed in the legal assistant, paralegal, legal secretary and data entry clerk job descriptions, as necessary.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned by the CEO, Deputy Executive Director or Chief Attorney.

 EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and at least one (1) year related experience, or
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) year college or University with an Associate’s degree in related field and at least three (3) years related experience, or
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of related experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the above standards.        

Additional Requirements: Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License and have a registered, insured vehicle available for use during working hours.

 Knowledge of: Principles of supervision; Microsoft Office Suite; databases and data entry.

 Ability to: Successfully supervise individuals to achieve maximum performance; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; work independently and establish work priorities; maintain confidentiality and objectivity; manage assigned caseload; operate personal computer and computer applications used by the unit; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and interact well with the public.

 This position is full-time.

 Salary Range: $63,000 – $68,000, depending on experience
