Overview: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including, eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, education, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly over hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
STAFF ATTORNEY: To staff a project providing a wide variety of legal services, including but not limited to public benefits, housing, family law, employment law, debtor/creditor law, and civil post-conviction relief, to low-income clients who have previously been incarcerated. The purpose of the unit is to provide comprehensive services which, working with other relevant service providers and self-advocacy organizations, will assist our clients to reenter society as equal members, to maintain housing and employment, and to re-establish family ties and responsibilities on a sustainable basis.
Duties will include all phases of representation from intake, advice and counsel, and informal advocacy through direct representation and appeal, as well as contact with parole and probation offices when necessary. Some community legal education is also expected.
SALARY: $60,458.00
