Staff Attorney

Overview: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing
free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, education, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.

JOB DESCRIPTION: NSLS has an immediate opening for a full-time staff attorney, assigned to the Education and Disability Rights Project, which provides legal advice and representation to individuals with disabilities in matters such as special education and the appeal of adverse eligibility determinations pertaining to disability related services/programs through the NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Assistance also includes representation of students at residency hearings and the protection of the educational rights of homeless students.

DUTIES: Representation of eligible clients at Committee on Special Education meetings, Resolution Session, Impartial Hearing, at administrative hearing, before state courts, the NYS Office of State Review and the NYS Commissioner of Education. Provide advice and advocacy services via telephone. The staff attorney will be required to maintain case records in the office's computerized case management system.

START DATE: Immediate
SALARY: DOE, union scale with excellent benefits.

Requirements: Admission to New York State Bar. Applicants who have passed the Bar Examination and are pending admission will also be considered. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred. Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may be considered. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program.
