The Interim Public Defender shall be responsible for administration of the Schuyler County Public Defender’s Office, its team of attorneys (assistant public defenders) and support/clerical staff in the discharge of their various responsibilities.
The work involves responsibility for directing the investigation and preparation of cases, and ensuring counsel is provided to clients at every stage of the proceedings. The Interim Public Defender shall initiate such proceedings as are necessary to protect the rights of each client. In addition, the Interim Public Defender may assign professional, technical and clerical personnel in the investigation, preparation, conduct and appeal in any court proceedings involving financially eligible persons. The work is performed under guidelines provided by law.
The County anticipates that the term of the contract awarded under this RFP will be until December 31, 2023. During this time period, the County anticipates conducting a comprehensive search for a duly qualified Public Defender, qualified pursuant to Schuyler County Local Law No. 4 of the Year 2011, New York State County Law Art. 18-A and New York State Public Officers Law Article 2.
Schuyler County, New York is seeking proposals from qualified individuals or firms interested in providing Indigent Legal Services: Interim Public Defender. Proposals shall be enclosed in a sealed envelope clearly marked “INDIGENT LEGAL SERVICES: INTERIM PUBLIC DEFENDER” and be mailed or delivered to the Clerk of the Legislature, 105 Ninth Street, Unit 6, Watkins Glen, NY 14891, no later than July 1, 2022, at 10:30 AM.
