LEGAL SERVICES PARALEGAL (OLEAN, NY)
The Olean office of Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. ® (LawNY ® ) has an
immediate opening for a Paralegal to provide backup in housing cases and representation
in Disability Advocacy Project (DAP) cases. The Paralegal’s duties will include initial client
intake interviews, factual investigation of clients’ cases, legal research, preparing legal
documents, and representing clients at disability hearings. The Paralegal’s duties will also
include additional office duties as needed.
Program: LawNY ® is a not-for-profit law firm which provides civil legal services to low-
income clients in a fourteen-county region in the Finger Lakes and western New York State.
The Olean office serves Cattaraugus County and provides representation primarily in the
areas of housing, government benefits and family law. We are looking for a Paralegal who
can meet with housing clients telephonically, gather relevant information, assist in drafting
necessary documents and provide administrative backup including drafting reports to
funders. The paralegal will also speak with clients who have been denied Supplemental
Security Income benefits and/or Social Security Disability benefits, gather their medical
evidence, evaluate the merits of their case, make recommendations regarding
representation to an experienced supervising attorney and provide representation at
administrative hearings when appropriate.
Requirements: College degree and/or relevant work experience, is required. Applicants
must have excellent organization and writing skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and
ability to work with minimal supervision is necessary. A commitment to helping poor and
disadvantaged people overcome institutional barriers to legal access is desired. Proficiency
in Spanish is an advantage, but is not required.
Salary: Salary is dependent on experience. The salary for a Paralegal who is credited with
five years of experience is $36,820. The initial salary will increase annually based upon
LawNY ® ’s salary scale. LawNY ® provides an excellent health insurance, disability and
