Health Justice Advocacy Supervisor

The Mental Health Project of the Urban Justice Center (MHP) seeks a full-time Health Justice Advocacy Supervisor to help lead our public benefits work, with a specific focus on supporting our robust Medicaid practice.  MHP is a team of attorneys, social workers, peer specialists, and advocates dedicated to enforcing the rights of New Yorkers with mental health concerns experiencing poverty.  Our mission is to end the cycle of homelessness, hospitalization, and incarceration for people with mental health concerns experiencing poverty in New York City.

MHP has three core areas of practice: Health Justice Advocacy, Criminal Justice Advocacy, and Disability Justice Advocacy.  This position will supervise the Health Justice Advocacy team, which works directly with people who need access to Medicaid services and coordinates the Access to Recovery Coalition, a group of directly impacted people, peers, and allies seeking to improve Medicaid mental health recovery services.  The Health Justice Advocacy team currently includes one attorney and two peer specialists/advocates.  The person in this role will also handle Medicaid, SNAP, Public Assistance, and advance health care directive cases.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with our interdisciplinary team to advise and represent clients who need help understanding and accessing Medicaid services, resolving SNAP and Public Assistance problems, and executing advance health care directives;
  • Supervising attorneys, advocates, and peer specialists who work directly with clients on Medicaid issues and organize the Access to Recovery Coalition;
  • Presenting about Medicaid services to community groups, providers, and other advocacy organizations;
  • Tracking performance of and compliance with government contracts and other funding sources, and assisting with reporting on grants as needed; and
  • Building and maintaining relationships with community partners to increase the effectiveness and impact of MHP’s health justice advocacy work.

Qualifications include:

  • J.D. required, with a minimum of at least five years’ experience practicing law strongly preferred;
  • Supervisory experience preferred;
  • Knowledge of New York Medicaid required;
  • Knowledge of Medicare and other New York public benefits programs strongly preferred;
  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide supportive and thoughtful supervision through an anti-oppression lens;
  • Ability to work independently, manage a high caseload, stay organized, meet deadlines, and work under pressure; and
  • Commitment to advocating for people with mental health concerns.

The Urban Justice Center is temporarily working remotely. COVID-19 vaccination required.
