Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) has a position available for a full time Managing Attorney for our Albany office. The attorney will supervise a unit of Albany office housing staff, serving low income residents of Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Columbia and Greene Counties.  LASNNY provides the full range of free civil legal services to low-income residents in Northeastern New York. The Managing Attorney will oversee the provision of high quality civil legal services to clients, protecting essential rights and working to achieve racial equity through targeted advocacy, community legal education, and collaborative work with legal and non-legal partners.

The Managing Attorney is expected to oversee a unit of advocates who are creative, and compassionate, with the skills, substantive law expertise and the will to address both individual and systemic injustice.   The Managing Attorney must be committed to excellence and passionate about achieving justice, and must possess the desire and skill to lead, supervise, manage, train and mentor staff. Prior management or supervisory experience working with legal staff, including law clerks, is preferred. Strong administrative and team building skills are a must.

 

The Managing Attorney is expected to be an integral part of the legal and human service community and to be deeply involved in the network of government, community members, housing providers and others dedicated to assisting at risk households and to ensure members of their unit are similarly involved.   The office itself is a collegial and supportive workplace, encouraging staff development, mentoring and collaboration, and we expect the Managing Attorney to contribute to maintaining such a workplace.  

 

The office is located at 95 Central Avenue in Albany, New York, the state capital which is a lively, family friendly place to live with a reasonable cost of living, excellent quality of life, and easy access to major metropolitan areas as well as year-round outdoor opportunities.

 

 

Managing Attorney Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Oversee the day-to-day operations of Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP) and Landlord Tenant and ERAP attorneys: supervise the  provision of a full range of civil legal services; supervise other casehandlers in remote offices; lead strategic engagement with, and education of community members, groups and other stakeholders; work with executive management team and staff to plan and coordinate work of program; ensure timely adherence to program and case handling standards, funder requirements and the highest professional standards; guide the professional development of staff; and, be available as a resource to all LASNNY staff and access to justice communities. Reports to Deputy Director for Strategic Operations, located in Albany office. Responsible for supervising casehandlers and support staff in person and remotely.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Member in good standing of the New York State Bar or eligible for admission on motion
  • Minimum of seven years of legal experience, including litigation
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services or similar program preferred
  • Excellent administrative skills
  • Expertise in at least one area of LASNNY’s core practice areas: housing including landlord, tenant, or foreclosure law; public benefits including SSD/SSI, domestic violence and domestic relations, consumer, or elder law
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior legal work supervision and prior legal experience in foreclosure and landlord tenant law is preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Car and clean NY driver’s license

 

Salary depends upon experience.  Excellent benefits.
