Controller/Grants Manager I

The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) seeks a full time Controller/Grants Manager to oversee the agency’s budget and financial operations. VLP is a mixed model civil legal services program that coordinates services by pro bono attorneys and provides direct representation by our staff. We have two offices, one in Buffalo, NY and the other in Batavia, NY. This position works primarily out of the Buffalo office.


Duties/Responsibilities:
• Oversee accounting, budgeting, cost allocations, forecasting, reporting, and analysis for the agency
• Develop grant specific budgets with the CEO in response to various RFPs, and renewals of current grants
• Timely prepare and submit monthly/quarterly/annual vouchers with backup documentation to funders ensuring submissions are within budget allocations
• Prepare materials for yearly agency-wide independent audit
• Manage, supervise, and train staff within department duties
• Ensure and monitor internal controls ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and external audits
• Maintain relations, manage, and contract with funders
• Take part in Board of Directors meetings which will include presenting financial updates and projections

• Able to interpret grants and contract-related transactions as it relates to VLP policies, and governmental regulations, able to adapt to VLP financial systems, exhibits effective communication and sound judgement

• In coordination with the Grants Manager II, assist with the monitoring and management of grant budgets, development of budget projections, carry over and re-budgeting of funding requests, no-cost extension requests, and respond to program audits

• Maintains program files for awarded grants/contracts and proposals that weren’t accepted

• Will monitor grant project start, renewal, and end dates to provide assurances of proper and current award documentation

• Pre-award duties include assisting with budget preparation, coordination of sub-contracts with collaborating institutions, and routing of grant and contract proposals for appropriate institutional signatures.

• Ensure all reporting requirements are met and insurance coverages and vendor registrations are current for all contracts

• May require some local travel

• Other tasks may be assigned


Requirements/Skills - Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance or related field
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nonprofit accounting/fund accounting
• Analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
• Strong leadership and supervisory skills
• A willingness to work independently while also taking direction and operating as part of a team
• The ability to juggle many tasks efficiently and manage change
• The flexibility to handle other tasks as presented
• The means and willingness to travel locally (a driver’s license is required)
• Comfortable with public speaking


Requirements/Skills - Preferred:
• Certified Public Accountant Licensure
• Prior management/supervisory experience

This position will work out of our Buffalo, NY office with the possibility of some remote work after the introductory period.
