Overview
The Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) is a not-for-profit law firm serving low income residents of the Hudson Valley. HVJC represents clients in a variety of civil legal matters, including immigration, housing, public benefits, disability, employment, consumer, and family law. HVJC is currently the only organization representing tenants in eviction proceedings in Westchester County regardless of immigration status.
Position
The Housing Attorney position is open immediately. This position is currently funded for 1 year, with extension contingent on funding. Employment beyond that time period is contingent upon grant/funding renewal. The Housing Attorney will represent low-income tenants in eviction proceedings throughout Westchester County.
Responsibilities:
- Client intakes
- Litigation in state and federal courts, including appellate practice
- Education and outreach efforts directed at community members, advocates and service providers
- The person hired will also be expected to adhere to program and case handling standards, funder requirements, the highest professional standards, and be available as a resource to the community
Requirements
- Member in good standing of the New York State Bar
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders
- English/Spanish bilingual
- Driver’s license and transportation (e.g. car).
Preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services or similar program
- Two or more years of legal experience, including litigation, or its equivalent
Salary: Competitive salary with excellent benefits.
Location:
- HVJC’s office is located in White Plains, near public transit, but court appearances throughout Westchester County are required
