Staff Attorney

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT STAFF ATTORNEY LEGAL SERVICES OF CENTRAL NEW YORK, INC. (LSCNY)

Position: Legal Services of Central New York, Inc. will hire a staff attorney for the Binghamton office. The position will begin in January 2021.

Responsibilities: LSCNY has obtained a one-year grant to provide eviction defense and prevention legal services in Broome County, New York. The staff attorney will represent tenants in the Binghamton City Court and the Town and Village Courts in Broome County. The attorney will also counsel and advise tenants on their rights under state and federal law, conduct community outreach, and work to build partnerships with local community organizations. Additionally, the attorney will support eviction defense work by pro bono lawyers through a project with the Legal Aid Society of Mid New York, funded by the N.Y.S. Attorney General. The attorney will work as part of a team led by an experienced supervisor.

Currently, this position is funded for the calendar year 2021, but we will seek addition funding beyond 2021.

Qualification: Because the core responsibility of this position is eviction defense in court, applicants must be admitted or eligible for immediate admission to the bar of the State of New York. Attributes of a successful candidate are:

  • Bilingual or multi-lingual is a plus.

Salary/Benefits: Starting salary for a New York admitted attorney is from $46,750 to $74,750, depending on relevant experience. We have an excellent benefit package and a generous leave policy. LSCNY pays for bar memberships, attorney registration, and training opportunities, including Mandatory Continuing Legal Education courses.
