Staff Attorney - Housing and Consumer Law

Volunteer Legal Services Project provides free legal help to low-income residents of Monroe County, New York who are facing non-criminal legal problems. VLSP's services are provided by 1,600 pro bono volunteers who donate their time and talent to ensure that low-income people have access to the justice system ​when faced with serious legal problems.

The Staff Attorney’s duties will include running a county-wide tenant hotline and legal services’ connection point, as well as recruiting, training, and mentoring pro bono attorneys to provide volunteer representation of tenants in eviction matters throughout Monroe County. The Staff Attorney will have primary responsibility for ensuring that clients are served and the program objectives are met in a timely manner.  In addition, the Staff Attorney will provide support to staff and pro bono attorneys working in other areas of VLSP’s Consumer Law unit, including foreclosure, unemployment insurance benefits appeals, debtor-creditor matters, bankruptcy and other consumer law cases. 

This position requires the ability to work independently and exercise sound and compassionate judgment in a fast-paced environment.   It also requires the ability to serve a very diverse clientele that may be in crisis or has endured various forms of trauma, as well as to work collaboratively with stakeholders including the private bar, government, courts, and other community members.  The Staff Attorney is also responsible for accurately tracking and timely reporting of data within the organization’s case management system. 

Education/Experience/Skill: Admission to the New York State Bar or a New York State practice order are required.  Experience in landlord/tenant and housing law preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong time-management skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information. Excellent attention to detail and technical skills relating to database/case management systems and computer software platforms. Commitment to working in a client-focused, respectful, and collegial environment.

This position is not a permanent remote position however, all VLSP staff is currently operating remotely to limit the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of staff and clients. Staff continues to serve clients remotely, or when necessary, in-person, following appropriate safety protocols and procedures as provided by local, state, and federal government agencies.   PPE will be provided by the agency when applicable.
