SOCIAL WORKER
OFFICE LOCATION: Hempstead
Nassau/Suffolk Law Services is a non-profit, community-based poverty law program which provides free legal assistance in civil (non-criminal) matters to low income Long Islanders. Social workers on staff provide support and services to our most vulnerable clients.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Social Worker will work within an interdisciplinary setting. Supervision will be provided by the Director of Social Work as well as the Supervising Attorney. The duties of the Social Worker shall include: assisting clients in extreme emotional crisis; assisting vulnerable clients, including those facing loss of income and/or lack of food, and those that cannot navigate necessary systems alone; providing resources and referrals; informal advocacy; community education where feasible and appropriate; supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate interns; working with community agencies and attending community meetings; short-term supportive counseling; conducting home visits when appropriate and necessary; conducting interviews and initial assessments of clients’ needs; and performing necessary administrative tasks. The Social Worker will have a specific responsibility of working within a specialized unit which provides services to HIV+ individuals and their families. The Social Worker, with these clients, will assist by providing family stabilization support services.
REQUIREMENTS: An M.S.W. degree from an accredited school of social work. New York State License must be either current or candidate must be willing to acquire. Must have completed, or be willing to complete, Seminar in Field Instruction. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English required. A strong interest in advocacy is important. Experience working in the field of HIV/AIDS will be viewed favorably.
START DATE: Immediate
SALARY: DOE, union scale with excellent benefits
