Staff Attorney

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) has a staff attorney position available in its Utica Office to provide legal assistance to two groups of clients.  The position will serve both domestic violence survivors pursuant to a New York State Domestic Violence Grant from New York DCJS and seniors (age 60 and older) under Older Americans Act Grants through the local Offices for the Aging in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison Counties. It is anticipated that casework will be evenly distributed between domestic violence and elder law work, though the distribution could shift based on funding and client needs.  

Job responsibilities: The staff attorney will provide direct and comprehensive legal services to eligible clients, which will include advice, negotiation, motion practice and litigation. The staff attorney will represent survivors of domestic violence in matrimonial actions and other civil legal matters related to the domestic violence, which may include custody/visitation, family offenses, abuse/ neglect matters, consumer, and housing issues.  Further, the staff attorney will provide legal assistance to elder law clients, including, but not limited to: preparing wills, health care proxies, and powers of attorney; providing counsel and advice on consumer and housing issues; and providing other legal services as appropriate.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must be admitted to the New York State Bar.  Trial experience is preferred.  A commitment to professional growth, excellent organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for direct client services and commitment to social justice required.  Other qualifying factors include: the nature and extent of prior legal experience, particularly in the areas of family law; knowledge and understanding of the legal problems and needs of the poor, prior experience in the client community or in other programs to aid the poor, ability to communicate with  persons  in  the  client  community;  and  cultural  similarity with  the  client community.
