Supervising Attorney, Tenants' Rights Unit |
As NYC's Universal Access initiative continues to expand the Right to
Counsel to all low-income New Yorkers facing eviction, NYLAG's Tenants?
Rights Unit (TRU) has an immediate opening for a Supervising Attorney in
its Tenants' Rights Unit (TRU) to supervise attorneys that practice in
Brooklyn. We are looking for an experienced attorney with strong
leadership and management skills who is passionate about asserting
tenants' rights and is ready to fight hard to defend our client
population, which consists primarily of low-income tenants of color
threatened with eviction and displacement due to rapid development and
gentrification.
In this role, you will supervise a
team of about five attorneys and a paralegal and support them to pursue
creative and effective legal strategies to enable our clients to stay
in their apartments and communities. The ideal candidate will have some
supervisory experience as an attorney and extensive experience
representing NYC tenants in non-payments, holdovers, HP Actions, and
housing-related administrative proceedings. As part of this position,
you will also play a critical role in the implementation of Right to
Counsel/Universal Access in New York City.
Duties
and Responsibilities:
- Train,
supervise, and mentor staff and interns
- Review and
revise pleadings, correspondence, motion papers, bills of particulars
and discovery, stipulations, and make decisions on litigation and
settlement strategies
- Prepare Staff Attorneys and
paralegals for court and administrative appearances and appear with them
as necessary
- Oversee a weekly high-volume,
court-based intake protocol
- Manage internal and
partner out-of-court referrals
- Ensure staff complies
with grant reporting and data entry
requirements
- Respond tactfully to client, community,
and staff concerns
- Create and maintain a
professional and collegial work environment that fosters excellent legal
outcomes, effective teamwork, and clear
communication
- Reinforce and maintain staff
accountability
- Develop and maintain relationships
with community-based organizations, advocates, government agencies,
elected officials, and the courts
- Participate with
HRA working groups and other meetings regarding the implementation of
Universal Access
Qualifications:
Requirements
-
Five years of experience as an admitted
attorney

Demonstrated commitment to addressing fundamental issues of poverty,
racial justice, and social justice within a comprehensive civil legal
services model of
representation
-
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a
team
-
Admitted to New York
Bar
-
At least one year of experience representing tenants in NYC Housing
Court
Plus factors
- Supervisory experience as an
attorney
- Fluency in Spanish, French, Russian,
Haitian Creole, Bengali, or another foreign language prevalent in NYC.
