The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Supervising Attorney to work in the Law Reform and Immigration Law Unit's Federal Practice.

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice has an opening for a Temporary DV/Consumer Staff Attorney position in the Family/DV Project for a one-year assignment. The attorney must have experience in consumer law. The Family/DV Project provides comprehensive direct legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence in a broad range of civil matters, including orders of protection, divorces, custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, property rights, disability, housing, public benefits, health, employment, consumer matters, and immigration. The DV/Consumer Staff Attorney is expected to represent clients in all five boroughs primarily in consumer matters, such as access to financial services, debt collection, debt settlement company abuses, credit fraud, identity theft, credit reporting issues, medical debt, auto fraud, student loans, and FDCPA matters. The DV/Consumer Staff Attorney will also handle Bankruptcy matters, such as Chapters 7 and 13. The attorney will advocate in multiple venues, including civil, supreme, family, and federal courts. The attorney is required to work with Family/DV Project partners, community-based organizations in a city-wide collaboration to provide reciprocal referrals, training, case consultation, clinics, outreach, and joint community education on various issues affecting survivors of domestic violence. The attorney will also be required to provide outreach to various off site locations. The attorney will also actively participate in city and statewide committees and task forces on consumer and DV issues, as well as advocate for policy changes.

Following the conclusion of this one-year assignment, the Staff Attorney will be reassigned to an available attorney position in another Civil Practice office or unit, unless there are other Staff Attorney openings in the Civil Practice for which the Staff Attorney applies and is selected.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Client representation in city, state, and federal court proceedings, administrative hearings and affirmative litigation
* Client representation and advocacy with local, state, and federal agencies
* Training, community outreach, and education to individuals, local community-based organizations, and housing advocates
* Conduct policy advocacy
* Coordination and collaborative work with other groups and organizations
* Represent the Civil Practice and The Legal Aid Society in the community
* Promote the work of the office, the Housing Law Practice, and the Civil Practice 
* Work with pro bono lawyers and partner organizations
* Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours

Requirements

* Admission to the New York State Bar
* Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people and immigrants is strongly desired
* Excellent written and oral advocacy skills
* Excellent organizational skills
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team and manage a high volume of cases
* Demonstrated commitment to and experience in public interest law and civil legal services
* Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations
* Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
