Criminal Defense Practice Rikers Staff Attorney

The Special Litigation Unit of the Criminal Defense Practice has an opening for a rotator Staff Attorney. The attorney will work on Article 78 proceedings challenging Rikers disciplinary determinations and other deprivations of the rights of incarcerated persons in city custody. The Staff Attorney will help to handle the "Writ Calendar" at Rikers Island Judicial Center where The Legal Aid Society is assigned to represent every incarcerated person who files a pro se petition. The attorney will be required to interview clients several days a week, help to file amended motions in appropriate cases, and help to investigate test cases and affirmative litigation surrounding issues of Rikers disciplinary proceedings and security classifications.

The attorney will work with the assistance of the Special Litigation Unit and will be trained to work jointly with experienced counsel and an experienced paralegal. The attorney will be based in both Rikers Island and New York County.

Requirements

* Admission to the New York State Bar
* Experience working with incarcerated persons
* Strong constitutional and civil rights background is preferred
* Knowledge of New York City Department of Correction and Article 78 practice is preferred
* Commitment to client-centered training and practice
* Excellent speaking, organizational, writing, interpersonal and teaching skills
