The
Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. seeks four (4) dynamic staff attorneys
to represent Domestic Violence and/or Sexual Assault Survivors in Broome,
Cayuga, Herkimer, and Oneida Counties in a holistic, client-centered advocacy
practice. The attorneys will work
primarily from the offices of Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault service
providers.
Job
responsibilities: Provide direct and comprehensive legal services to eligible clients
including advice, negotiation, litigation in administrative tribunals and
courts. The staff attorney will
represent clients in a general practice including, but not limited to, Housing,
Public Benefits, Family, Disability, Employment, Protective Order, Consumer,
Education, Health, and Elder Law.
Criminal Court Accompaniment is also required.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must be admitted to the New York State Bar. Trial
experience is preferred. The candidate
must be highly organized and have strong written and oral advocacy skills as
well as strong legal research skills and the ability to learn new areas of law
quickly. The candidate should demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively
with non-attorneys, should be self-motivated and able to work
independently. Travel is required and
work schedule may vary depending on court hours. Candidate will be required to comply with all
Legal Services Corporation regulations and grant-based reporting
requirements. All candidates are subject
to background check.
Commitment
to professional growth, problem solving and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm
for direct client services and commitment to social justice is required. Other
qualifying factors include: the nature and extent of prior legal experience;
knowledge and understanding of the legal problems and needs of the poor, prior
experience in the client community or in other programs to aid the poor,
ability to communicate with persons in the client community; and cultural
similarity with the client community.
Salary
dependent on experience. Excellent fringe benefits.
